Notes
  • California def. Clemson, 61-60, to win the NIT title.
  • Duke became the first-ever school to have four players chosen in the first round of the NBA draft: Elton Brand, Trajan Langdon, William Avery, and Corey Maggette.
  • Minnesota started the NCAA tournament without four players, including two starters, all of whom were linked to alleged academic cheating.
  • Duke's men's and women's teams finished as runnerups in the NCAA, the women losing the title game to Purdue, 62-45.
  • Alvin Young's 25.1 ppg was the lowest by a national scoring champ since 1949, when Yale's Tony Lavelli won the crown with a 22.4 average.
